“John and I grew up in the same town, attended the same schools, and even lived across the street from each other at one point in our lives. Because we were 5 and a half years apart, our paths didn’t cross until later in life when I was a junior in college at NC State and he was working for a local bank. We connected through mutual friends on Facebook and started talking after John sent me a message asking if my parent’s house had been impacted by a tornado that hit the area the afternoon before. That one conversation turned into long conversations and a first date consisting of a movie and Pokey Stix from my favorite NC State pizza joint, Gumby’s. That date turned into many dates and before we knew it, we had a dog together and 3 years behind us filled with happiness and joy, but also testing life trials such as deaths on both sides of our family. During those years, we had talked about getting married and I had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before he would ask.
The weekend after Christmas of 2014, John and I decided to take a mini vacation to Asheville and stay at a historic Bed and Breakfast. We share a love for bed and breakfasts and this one will always be special to both of us because one night after walking back from dinner downtown, John proposed under a massive 250 year old tree in front of the house. It was just us, no one else around. It was perfect.
Who would have guessed that the 5 year old who lived across the street when I was a little girl would become my husband?! It’s funny how life works out and I couldn’t have asked for it to work out any better than it has for us!”
